National Housing Day:

A Call to Action for Safe and Affordable Homes

Every year on November 22, we recognize National Housing Day, a day focused on raising awareness about housing and homelessness in Canada. Housing at SHIP is seen as a fundamental right to all Canadians and it takes all of us to ensure every Canadian has a safe, affordable home.

Today we call on governments, financial institutions, developers, communities, Indigenous organizations, and other partners to come together to develop impactful solutions. An “all-hands-on-deck” approach isn’t just an option—it’s essential for tackling the housing and homelessness crisis. Beyond raising awareness, National Housing Day is about fostering collaboration and innovation to build a better future. Events across the country, tailored to local community needs, provide platforms for dialogue and action.

SHIP aims to address the issue of homelessness by providing a spectrum of housing options to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Join us, as we all have a role to play for a better future for all Canadians.

SHIPs Commitment to Housing:

Bridging Gaps Through our Central Intake & Access Program

On National Housing Day, we reflect on the importance of providing accessible, safe, and affordable housing for all Canadians. At SHIP, we’re proud to contribute to this mission through our Central Intake & Access Program, a vital access point to housing, mental health, and addiction services across the communities we serve.

The housing crisis is deeply felt in our communities. SHIP’s current waitlist for supportive housing includes approximately 2,300 individuals, with estimated wait times ranging from 5 to 10 years. This stark reality highlights the urgency of addressing housing shortages and the critical role programs like Central Intake & Access play in supporting those in need.

“Our team strives to provide timely support and compassionate guidance to every individual and family on our waitlist through a health equity and justice lens,” says Nicole Abruscato, Manager of Central Intake & Access. “The need for supportive housing far outweighs the available resources, but we remain committed to connecting people with the services and supports they need while advocating for systemic change.”

The Central Intake & Access Program simplifies the journey for individuals and families seeking support. Acting as a single point of contact, it ensures that people are connected to the right services, whether they are applying for housing, navigating mental health and addiction supports, or exploring community-based resources. Even during the long wait for housing, our Intake and Assessment Counsellors provide essential updates, advocacy, and a human connection.

National Housing Day reminds us that accessible housing is more than a necessity—it’s a human right. At SHIP, we are committed to breaking down barriers and fostering hope for those seeking stability, wellness, and community.

The Housing Crisis in Dufferin:

Building Hope and Homes at 236 First Street in Orangeville

On National Housing Day, we emphasize Canada’s urgent housing needs. In Dufferin County, the crisis severely impacts those seeking affordable, supportive homes. SHIP’s 236 First Street development, launched earlier this year, provides a crucial response to this issue.

The 26-unit building includes 24 studio units for individuals and 2 two-bedroom units for families. The residents have access to onsite services designed to support stability and well-being.

“236 First Street represents more than just housing—it’s about creating a foundation for hope, recovery, and community,” says Caitlin Ward, Manager of Supportive Housing in Dufferin at SHIP. “This program demonstrates SHIP’s commitment to addressing the housing crisis while fostering dignity and security for our residents.”
